Native American Songs

Haunting. Spellbinding. Mystical. These are some of the terms that easily and quite aptly describe traditional Native American songs.

In a culture without written language, the knowledge of all things past and present must be conveyed orally. They must be conveyed in vivid and memorable fashion using the most precisely perfect words possible.

Traditional Native American songs do just that.

Native American songs of creation and heritage convey a sense of timelessness and history that is passed along from one generation to the next. Religious beliefs and sacred rituals are the subject of such songs.

Songs are often easier to remember than conversations so many Native American songs are educational, intended as a means of training children and preparing them for adulthood.

There are many Native American songs of celebration. In cultures where nature was revered and held in the highest esteem, there is much cause for celebration. The turning of the seasons, crop planting and harvesting, phases of the moon, and migration of animals were cause for celebration and are honored in song.

Some Native American songs tell the stories of the animals associated with a given tribe. The bear, the wolf, the buffalo, and the salmon are the subject of song. Some songs speak of their spirit natures and some of their cunning and beauty. Early Native Americans honored all animals and all found a place in song.

The shaman used Native American songs and chants to heal his people. Shamanic songs often appealed to the spirits to bring an end to the suffering of an individual and to the suffering of the people as a whole in times of distress such as impending war, drought, famine, and other adverse conditions. Violent acts of nature such as earthquakes, wildfire, volcanic eruption, and flooding are commemorated in song.

And anytime there is music, there is love. There are many, many Native American songs that celebrate this most mysterious and enchanting aspect of life. Every culture sings of love.
